Questions and answers about your investment
Millions of people want to fly less. Surveys by booking.com and Expedia show that about one-third of travelers want to travel more sustainably and are willing to travel more slowly and pay more to do so. Additionally, 10% of the population suffers from a fear of flying.
Many people appreciate the time savings of traveling while they sleep and the cost savings since they don’t need a hotel night. According to a survey by 20min Online, over 50% of the 15,000 participants would book Twiliner.
For distances over 700 km, daytime trains often take too much valuable time. Night trains only operate on a few routes, and expansion is stagnant. With Twiliner, we are filling this significant gap in the mobility sector.
We also asked the environmental consulting firm Myclimate about this. They calculated that traveling with Twiliner results in 87% (when using diesel) to 93% (biodiesel) less environmental impact compared to flying.
Your personal impact depends on how many people switch from flying to taking the bus and how many buses we will operate.
Your direct impact as a seat sponsor:
- Approximately 260 Twiliner passengers will be transported on your seat each year.
- About two-thirds of these passengers would have flown if Twiliner did not exist.
- Your direct impact amounts to 170 short-haul flights, which corresponds to about 50 tons of CO2 emissions.
Your indirect impact as a seat sponsor:
- As a shareholder, you make the Twiliner business model possible and contribute to the overall CO2 reduction of Twiliner.
- By 2030, we expect to have 500 buses and achieve a reduction of one million tons of CO2 equivalent.
- This means you can account for a reduction of 353 tons of CO2 equivalent, which is roughly equivalent to 640 short-haul flights.
We are a startup, so investing is risky. It is possible that your shares could become completely worthless within a few years. However, in the event of success, your shares will significantly increase in value.
You can keep Twiliner shares or potentially sell them back to Twiliner or to other shareholders. If we make an exit, you will fully benefit.
The market is huge. Within Europe, over 500 million trips are made annually that could be served by a night bus. For example, over 2,000 people travel between Zurich and Barcelona every day. Our bus can carry 21 people, and we break even with 14 passengers.
Your shares should increase in value over time, allowing you to sell them profitably, similar to publicly traded companies. The earlier you invest, the greater the potential.
We believe in our community and want to grow together. Similar to a cooperative, the first shareholders of Twiliner receive discounts on ticket prices and, for an investment of CHF 5,000 or more, one free ticket per year.
The seat! Twiliner has developed the first and only reclining seat that can safely transport flat-lying passengers and is approved in Europe. We have filed a patent for it, and a second one is in progress. This makes Twiliner the only bus company that can legally offer reclining transport in Europe.
Our night travel bus is specifically designed for night travel. It includes a large toilet, a separate wardrobe, as well as snack and beverage bars. Our journeys are direct—without stops in the middle of the night.
Currently, there is no approved reclining bus seat with a safe restraint system for passengers in lying position. We developed such a system in collaboration with the Bern University of Applied Sciences. This is the key to a novel and unique mobility solution in Europe.
Like Flixbus, Twiliner is a travel platform. Our bus partners finance, maintain, and operate the buses, while we sell the tickets through our booking platform and partners. This business model has three key advantages:
- 1. Low Risk: We do not need to hire our own drivers, and if a route is not profitable, we can change or discontinue it.
- 2. Low Capital Requirement: Since the bus partners procure the buses and, in the future, also the seats, we need little or no capital for growth.
- 3. Scalability: If demand is high, we can operate additional buses and establish new routes within months.
Twiliner offers a niche product with no direct competitors. Other bus companies like Flixbus cater to a different customer segment. Night trains are often overbooked, and their expansion is progressing slowly. We see ourselves as a complement to night trains and an eco-friendly alternative to air travel.
With fewer than 13 passengers, we already break even. We expect an average occupancy of 17 passengers per bus. With six buses, Twiliner as a company reaches break-even and can quickly become profitable. In the first few years, we plan to use the profit to rapidly build a Europe-wide route network.
Three buses have already been ordered and are in production. We expect to start operating the first routes in March 2025, with additional routes potentially following later in the year. By 2027, we aim to cover 25 routes across Europe.
